EDSITEment is published by the National Endowment for the Humanities. It is a very well designed and easy to use source for online lesson plans and ideas. They have partnered with some of the world's great museums, libraries, cultural institutions, and universities to bring resources covering art and culture, literature, language arts, foreign language, history, and social studies. Their webiste includes links to over 100 of the top humanities sites and online lesson plans which integrate these resources to promote active learning.

When Michael Farris and Michael Smith founded Home School Legal Defense Association in March of 1983, home schooling was just a tiny blip on the education radar screen. The concept of parents teaching their children at home was relatively obscure, and the families who chose to follow this non-traditional education route were fairly certain to face opposition from the educational bureaucracy and following legal entanglements, as well as from their own friends and family.

It's mid-morning and Erin and Noah are playing with Duplo. They have built something they are calling a "mooseum" which has incorporated almost every block we own. Each doorway serves a specific imaginary purpose. A windmill apparently supplies the museum with power. There is a large parking lot for cars and trains. The museum is popular and very busy today. The "less fierce" animals, those with soft fur, reside in a special area where they are looked after by the Red Guy. The Blue Guy is feeding meat and bones to the fiercer animals in another area. A monkey is balancing on the fridge but keeps falling off. Erin and Noah laugh every time this happens. The train is leaving on a tour of the museum grounds. The Green Guy, who drives the train, gives a running commentary of the exhibits, by way of Erin. The tour encircles the play room, winding under the legs of the piano bench, over to the computer desk where am sitting with the baby, around the couch and back to the museum.

The PASS Test was developed specifically for home schoolers. It has certain similarities to other achievement tests in that it estimates student achievement in the subjects of reading, language, and math. But is has important differences. It introduces four major improvements over most achievement tests presently available. First, it was designed for parents to administer at home. This can greatly reduce the stress level of testing. Second, it is untimed, which helps students to relax. Third, the student's approximate achievement level within his or her grade is initially identified by use of a brief accompanying placement test. This assigns each child to a test level where he or she is more likely to succeed, and it also allows for shorter tests. Finally, testing results show overall achievement as well as performance in each subject. The test is standardized and children's scores are compared with both national and home-schooling populations. This does not mean that the test is nationally normed, but that the scores are equated to those of public school students taking one of the nationally-normed tests. The states of Alaska, New York, and North Carolina have officially approved the PASS Test for purposes of state reporting. In other states which require testing, you should check with your local school district to make sure it meets their requirements.

Homeschooling is chosen by families for reasons like apprehensions about school environments, dissatisfaction with academic instruction, and a wish for religious and moral guidance not found in traditional schools. The decentralized homeschooling population complicates researchers’ efforts to draw definite conclusions about its effect on outcomes, including academic achievement. Nevertheless, assessments consistently highlight the strong academic performance of homeschooled students.

Anecdotal evidence seems to indicate that homeschooling is growing in the black community. Mike Smith of the Home School Legal Defense Association discusses this with Joyce Burges, co-founder of the National Black Home Educators Resource Association.

Nonverbal Learning Disorder (NLD), also called Nonverbal Learning Disabilities, is a developmental disability that affects children's academic progress as well as their social and emotional development. NVLD encompasses a combination of learning, academic, social and emotional issues. This article looks at factors to consider before choosing to homeschool.
